This project was completed as a conceptual case study.

The Problem:
Based on literary works from the Folio Society, choose an author and design a series of two book covers based on their works. In terms of design, consider aspects of illustration style, aligned spine, title treatment, minimal approach, and color and pattern. Consider the abstraction of shape and form.

The Solution:
I selected Oscar Wilde for this project to celebrate his dedication to flamboyant
aestheticism. My goal was to highlight his writing by incorporating symbolism from
the Victorian era alongside key motifs drawn directly from his texts.

First Book Cover Design: The Picture of Dorian Gray
I drew upon the book’s core symbolism, specifically roses and Victorian-era fashion, to create a cover that reflects the ornate beauty emphasized by Oscar Wilde. To capture the story’s central tension, I remixed two typefaces, Zapfino and Instrumental Serif. The juxtaposition mirrors Dorian Gray’s internal conflict between surface aesthetics and the state of his soul. The design features a metallic floral pattern that blends hard textures with delicate, soft organic shapes. For the color palette, I chose a deep red background to heighten the dramatic narrative, contrasted against a muted blue spine. This warm-and-cool contrast allows the blue to simultaneously ground the design and evoke a cold, metallic feel.

Second Book Cover Design: The Happy Prince
I used the same colour scheme as The Picture of Dorian Gray to make this cover look cohesive as an Oscar Wilde series. The floral pattern is specifically crafted from rubies and sapphires, referencing the jewels from the story. To honor the author’s background, the crown design is rooted in Victorian-era aesthetics, while the lily—Oscar Wilde’s favorite flower—serves as the primary floral motif. I selected Zapfino as the lead typeface; its delicate, fluid strokes provide a whimsical feel that appeals to a broader, all-ages audience.
