This project was completed as a conceptual case study.
The Problem:
Design a highly detailed figure illustration where every element of staging, research, and composition is intentionally used to clearly communicate the story's narrative and emotional core.
Design a highly detailed figure illustration where every element of staging, research, and composition is intentionally used to clearly communicate the story's narrative and emotional core.
The Solution:
The project began by adapting the "Forget Me Not" flower into a whimsical world of garden guard fairies, exploring themes of loyalty and sacrifice. The central narrative focuses on the conflict between a friendly, curious dog and the fairies' prejudiced, fiercely protective community. Tension escalates when a cowardly guard must choose between following orders from a cold commander and recognizing the dog's kind nature.
Visually, the piece evokes massive scale and wonder (inspired by A Bug's Life and Arrietty) through exaggerated plants and the extreme size contrast between the dog and the fairies. The staging is analytically designed using two triangular formations to symbolize the strained power dynamic and focus the moment of conflict. This tension is further reinforced by the guard's subtle placement on a giant dog paw print, signifying their low social rank and internal struggle.
Aesthetically, the work conveys fright and whimsy. The palette centers on indigo (mystery/cold), brown (the dog's warmth/contrast), and cool pink (implied danger), drawing inspiration from Mary Blair and medieval knight legends.
Intended for a general, children-friendly audience in the fantasy and comedy genres, the piece serves as a strong portfolio addition and explores the central theme: How do the fairies overcome their fear and embrace the idea that not everything new poses a threat?
